One of my favorite parts of this job is creating a space that is truly functional, purposeful and beautifully designed all together. The function and purpose of a space really pushes the overall design. With any space we design those two elements always come first. We want our clients to have a home that serves them and their lifestyle. While at the same time feels like home. Our Drury + Southport project came in as pretty much a blank slate. A laundry room with minimal function and a lot of the room itself lacked purpose. I am excited to share the full reveal with you today!

When we got started, the room really fell short in all three areas.

The goal was to create a space that felt welcoming as you entered our clients home yet allowing for them to have a dumping ground…. oh and do laundry too! Welcome to our 100% custom Mudroom Laundry room.

When you first walk in there is a set back in the room itself calling for some love.

Here we created a custom two tone mudroom with built in storage for boots, shoes, hats, mittens and gloves. You name it we made sure there is room to store it. Knowing we live in a state with all four seasons we wanted to ensure our clients were always prepared no matter what the weather brought.

Our clients are a young family so we created a space custom to their needs now and one that would grow with them into the future. Each locker/cubby has three hooks and it’s own outlet.

As you pass the mudroom you are welcomed into what was once a very sad but slightly workable laundry room. All I can think about is the dust collection happening on top of the cabinets! That and how the space isn’t being used to its full potential.

We wanted to create a space that made you feel like doing laundry isn’t actually as awful as it sometimes feels. First up was adding color, dimension and of course function to make this space much more purposeful!

Having an actual sink to use for laundry or cleaning muddy kids shoes was a must. The 30 inch apron front sink allows for ample amount of working space. We made custom cabinets to fit the space. The base cabinets are Sherwin Williams Alabaster and the uppers are Sherwin William Rosemary.

With a laundry room comes the functional purpose for how you do laundry. Our clients need more space for storage, folding clothes and hanging items to dry. We installed a drying rack along and created a wood countertop around the sink and folding station. Yes, wood and no they do not need to worry about it breaking down. We have sealed the wood with polyurethane to ensure it can withstand the water. The counter is stained in special walnut and the shelves are left natural with polyurethane over them.

We used glass storage containers throughout the laundry room for storage. All hardware is from Battle Creek Hardware. The open shelving allows for simple storage and easy access to items. While the wallpaper brings an additional texture to the room. We paired that with a texture board and batten wall!

While this room is long and narrow there are so many fun simple details that went into bringing this space to life. Including adding a vintage rug with pattern to the space with a bold wallpaper already living in it! I’ve linked all the sources I could at the bottom of this post!
